lasceaux
Cave painting (c. 32000 years old) like this one at a cave in Lascaux in France is among the first art work known to us. Most depict hunting and animals.


egyptian art
Egyptian Art (5000 BC to 300 AD). First major civilisation to produce art. often depicting royals and animals side on. didn't understand perspective.


hellenic vase
Greek Art (c. 3000 years old). Often fascinated by the human form and athleticism such as this hellenic vase. The Greeks influenced greatly the art work of the Romans.



rome art
Roman art (c.2200 years old) is about Roman power (like the Colosseum here) and is often modelled on the art works of the Greeks. Roman gods and fighting are also popular themes.



Renaissance Giotto c.1365
Renaissance (14th and 15th century Italy)
Often religious works made for the catholic Pope. Michelangelo, Da Vinci and giotto as featured above are famous Renaissance artists.



Realism (1850's)
Realism painting (1850's) like this one by Millet show us real life (Genre) scenes with no frills. The movement was a reation from photography and a new desire to reflect truth and move away from the excesses of Romanticism. This desire to capture trith and reality led to Impressionsm.



impressionism
Impressionism (1860s - end of 19th century) lots of individual marks of colour making a picture. Light and colour are more important than line!
Impressionist painters like Renior here painted directly from observation on small, portable
light or white canvases.



Sunflowers by Van Goph
Post-Impressionism (Late 1800s)

Often by artists that were once Impressionists like Van Goph here and his great friend Paul Gaugin. Colours were often not realistic as the artworks were about emotion and symbolism more than the way things really appear.



Cubism (1907 - late 1920s)

Cubism (1907 - late 1920s). Cubism shows us many views or perspectives at once. Picasso's painting has freed artists to consider new ways of making art.

We use this site with our youngens - should help with after Cubism question.
